Ellanor (Bodie) Brizendine

Each month RG175 does a "deeper dive" to get to know one of our Independent School colleagues. This month we are spotlighting Bodie Brizendine. Bodie has served as the Head of School at two nationally recognized independent schools: The Spence School from 2007-2022 and Marin Academy from 1995-2006. Her tenure, which spans nearly three decades, is distinguished by leading transformative growth in programs and institutional resources, while also deepening mission and community culture. Why did you choose RG175?

I have long admired the confidence, vision and distinction of RG175. The consultants within the firm have an extraordinary depth and understanding of schools and people who lead them: heads, trustees and senior administration alike. They know schools like the back of their hands, and their collective work at RG175 has been nothing short of remarkable. I wanted to be part of that legacy, and I’m honored to be working by their side.

What are you looking forward to most about being a consultant in a search?

In my career, I have always looked strategically for that next level of good in schools. I can’t think of a more significant process for furthering institutional vision and strength in schools than the quest for strong leadership. Strong consulting can make a difference, and I am excited to be part of that work.

What is most rewarding about serving as a mentor to a school head?

Furthering leadership through mentorship is all about coaching: listening, understanding and generative collaboration. In many ways, mentoring stands as a perfect example of teaching and learning, all within the realm of leadership. Headship can often feel singular, even lonely. Good mentoring allows for an exchange that challenges isolation while generating good thinking…together. What a wonderful opportunity!

What are your thoughts on the school search?

A school search is all about process, clarity and purpose, with consultants and the school working closely together in a collaboration that holds integrity at the helm. The search embraces the challenges and opportunities for transformative work in naming the next leadership of the school. I like to say that this kind of work is awesome, both in joy and in responsibility.
