Tambi Tyler

Each month RG175 does a "deeper dive" to get to know one of our Independent School colleagues. This month we are spotlighting Tambi Tyler. Tambi began her teaching career in Des Moines Public Schools, where she worked for 19 years in multiple leadership roles from teacher to Middle School Vice Principal. From there she joined the faculty of Atlanta International School and served five years as the Upper School Principal and Deputy Head of Secondary Education. Most recently Ms. Tyler served as the Head of School for The Colorado Springs School, and she is delighted to be the next Head of School at The Ellis School as she has always believed in the power of girls and their unstoppable potential.

What’s your connection to RG175?

My first encounter with RG175 was a virtual meeting prior to the pandemic with Coreen Hester and Doreen Oleson. I had submitted my resume in hopes of securing a new role as Head of School. I was new to the process, new to the firm, and new to RG175. I had a list of questions, enthusiasm, naivety, and a bag of talents that I wanted to showcase in the best way possible. We discussed my resume, upcoming interviews, RG175, their professional journeys, along with some much needed direct feedback. Their invaluable professionalism and straight forward demeanor was truly a gift. Recently, Rebecca Upham and Marcia Spiller conducted virtual interviews with me for my current assignment. Again, I received professional women with clear expectations and regarding the hiring process. Marcia explained each step with care and direct feedback. She made sure each step was handled with stellar professionalism and was always in front of the process. Rebecca provided a plethora of wisdom with a smile. She ushered the process with insightful nuggets of understanding. She too, exuded care for the process and the candidates.

What do you enjoy most about your job as it pertains to Independent Schools?

I enjoy independent schools because of their essence. We strive to create unique experiences that support and develop young people into pioneers of change, we inspire them to give voice to silent issues, we encourage them to be leaders of industry, and above all we cultivate an atmosphere where they become global citizens with world perspective. This is the essence of independent schools and it is what I enjoy most about the job of leadership in Independent Schools.

Can you summarize your experience working with RG175?

My experience with RG175 is a unique one because it has been one of amazing women! They led the consulting process with true hallmarks of consultancy: understanding of the clients requirements, true client engagement, identifying potential problems, providing growth strategies, excellent applicant matching, and providing expert advice. If you had one thing to recommend to other candidates, what would it be? My advice to anyone looking for an independent school role would be “to thine ownself be true”. Take the time to know your professional personality, strengths, weaknesses, proclivities, and faults. When you share your resume, know that it is not the whole story and your consultant needs to know the complete profile that makes you a viable candidate.
